During a March City Plan Commission meeting, a dozen residents spoke against a city-initiated rezoning hearing along a major Oak Cliff corridor.
Since 2022, the City Plan Commission has sought to review the Hampton-Clarendon Corridor area and potentially change zoning through an authorized hearing.
The goal is to create a mixed-use district for small-scale businesses that are compatible with the surrounding neighborhoods and make the area more pedestrian friendly, according to city staff reports.
Staff hosted several community meetings to explain the potential changes and get neighbor feedback. Throughout these meetings, residents supported improving sidewalks and overall walkability but expressed fear of displacement and the removal of the Latino culture in the area.
Staff said they had productive community meetings to address displacement concerns, but the commissioners noted that they’ve still received many emails in opposition.
During the meeting’s public comment, about a dozen residents spoke against the hearing. Three spoke in support.
Ultimately, the commissioners held the vote for the April 24 meeting.
