On Friday, most non-emergency City of Dallas employees will be furloughed and several public-facing services and facilities are set to close, including libraries, cultural centers and city hall.

The non-paid day off for most of the 4,000+ employees is an attempt to help close the city’s $30 million budget shortfall, among other measures.

July 10 will be the first of three furlough days. The other two are set for Sept. 4 and Sept. 28.

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Tolbert announced the furlough plans last week, causing some confusion among city employees.

The city is also dealing with a $51 million shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins in October. The city is asking various departments to start looking into cutting services. Proposed cuts to libraries and community centers have drawn scrutiny from residents and council members.

A city council budget workshop was planned in mid-June, but the meeting never happened as several council members and city staff attended a World Cup match.

In a budget presentation prepared for the workshop meeting, staff emphasized that “difficult decisions” will need to be made to meet the budget gap.

Budget workshops and council district-specific town halls meetings are planned for August

Below is the schedule of public-facing services and facilities partially or fully closed on Friday.
