Where do you live, and how long have you lived there?
I’ve lived in Midway Hollow for about a year.
Did you grow up in Dallas? Where did you live previously?
I attended high school in Denver and came to Dallas to attend SMU on a football scholarship. I previously lived in East Dallas.
Tell us about your family.
I have 7 children from 24 years old down to 8 years old. All of them attended/attend Dallas ISD schools. My children and the need for improved public safety got me into politics. First in my neighborhood crime watch, then on various Dallas ISD boards and committees. I see improving the quality of life for Dallas’ families as critical to our future.
Have you run for office previously, whether for this seat or others?
I ran for City Council District 14 in 2019, won and served until 2021. [Blewett ran again for the seat in 2021 and lost, and ran for U.S. House District 32 in 2024, losing the Republican primary runoff to Darrell Day, who lost to now-U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson in the November election.]
What is the main reason you are running for this seat at this time?
I see tremendous needs and opportunities in District 6. It’s a big district and many areas have been overlooked. The number of homeless encampments and our crime stats prove it. I plan to work hard listening to all residents and ensure their specific needs are heard and acted on.
What is one thing that needs to change in West Dallas, and what policies will you create or activate to make that happen?
Neighborhood improvement. Dallas needs more workforce and family housing. West and Northwest Dallas have a lot of housing stock that we can revitalize. It’s been my experience that improving public safety and infrastructure leads directly to neighborhood cohesion and a higher quality of life.
What is one thing that needs to stay the same in West Dallas, and what policies will you create or activate to make that happen?
Preserve and protect the middle class nature of the district. Gentrification has changed many areas within Dallas, and as a result we have pushed out many families. I will fight to lower tax rates and raise the tax exemptions to help residents stay in their homes.
What other community and civic roles have you held in Dallas, especially in West Dallas? [We asked candidates to list up to 10 roles.]
Crime Watch Board member and chairman
Various Dallas ISD boards and committees
Dallas City Councilman, 2019-21
SMU Lettermen Board of Directors
What is the job of a Dallas city council member?
The job of a City Councilman is to be a manager. We need to listen to the needs of the residents. Analyze the available options to address these needs. And then ensure the City follows through on delivering the services needed. To do all that takes a broad perspective to understand the complexities of our entire city government. And a lot of work to hold the City responsible.
How will you approach this job on a day-to-day basis?
Ensure me and my council staff are responsive and thorough in resolving constituent concerns. Spend a significant amount of time in the district listening first hand and seeing the issues most important to the individual neighborhoods. And always have an eye on the fiscal well being of the City.
If you lose, would you be willing to serve as an appointee to a City board or commission? Yes or no?
Yes
If you win, would you be willing to appoint your fellow candidates to a City board or commission? Yes or no?
Yes
What distinguishes you from your fellow candidates?
I’ve done the job of councilman recently and I’ve navigated many of the public safety and budgetary items we currently face. I will never stop listening to be sure I hear the needs of our residents.
Is there anything we haven’t asked that voters should know?
I have owned a flooring distribution business in West Dallas (D6) for over 10 years, Atlas Floor Supply. Many of the contractors and installers, who are my customers, live and work in D6. I always discuss the needs of the area with them when they come in. It is a valuable resource to gain knowledge on a daily basis.
