The City of Dallas approved a long-awaited area plan to dramatically change land use in South Dallas at a City Council meeting Wednesday.
The plan aims to ignite small business growth by creating mixed-use areas and limit incompatible housing via design standards for single-family homes and duplexes.
The plan has taken years to develop and was a collaboration between the city and South Dallas residents and community leaders.
“This will be a part of the next decade, decades of growth for South Dallas,” said Adam Bazaldua, District 7 City Councilmember who’s championed the plan. “We know that growth is inevitably coming. What we wanted to do was make sure that growth was coming for South Dallas, that it’s not coming to make South Dallas someone else’s new neighborhood.”
The plan now heads into an implementation phase. It’ll be heard by the City Plan Commission and the council again to create specific zoning ordinances.
