How do you get Dallas news and information? What stories need to be told in and about your community? And how can local media serve you better?
These three questions are the basis of a survey Dallas Free Press is releasing today to inform our community journalism efforts in South Dallas and West Dallas, and to help our launching-soon local media collaborative determine its focus topic.
Your input will heavily shape our work this coming year, and will impact what stories local news outlets tell — and how we tell them — for years to come.
We’re making the survey available to all Dallas residents in both English and Spanish, and we hope that you will share these surveys widely with friends, neighbors and colleagues.

Survey results will be compiled and analyzed by the UT Austin Center for Media Engagement, which conducted similar research in Chicago. Once the Center finalizes the report, Dallas Free Press will distribute it via text and email to our subscribers.
Anyone who completes the survey will be eligible to win one of 10 $50 Target gift cards, and residents of West Dallas (zip code 75212) and South Dallas (zip codes 75210 and 75215) can opt to participate in a follow-up interview that, if selected, will receive $30 as a thank-you for their time.
In addition, Dallas Free Press community ambassadors will be present at South Dallas and West Dallas events over the next few weeks to gather input from as many neighbors as possible. We’ll be sending out a schedule of activities and volunteer opportunities; please reach out if you’re interested in volunteering or if we can partner with you at a neighborhood event!

Keri Mitchell has spent 20+ years as a community journalist, including 15 years dedicated to community and civic journalism at Dallas’ Advocate magazines. She launched Dallas Free Press in early 2020 with the belief that all neighborhoods deserve reporting and storytelling that values their community and holds leaders accountable.
Mitchell says she is energized by “knowing our work is making an impact — listening to people, telling their stories with strong narratives paired with compelling data that leads to change. I also love spending time in our neighborhoods and with our neighbors, learning from them and working to determine how journalism can be part of the solution to their challenges.”
Mitchell is proud to be the winner of multiple awards during her journalism career including: Finalist in Magazine Feature Reporting (2018) and Finalist in Magazine Investigative Reporting (2017) from Hugh Aynesworth Excellence in Journalism, Best Feature Story (2011) from Texas Community Newspaper Association and Best Magazine Feature (2011) from Dallas Bar Association Philbin Awards.
