During a March 6 City Plan Commission meeting, Kleberg residents asked commissioners to delay their decision on the future a stormwater detention lake due to environmental concerns.

Before 2002, the area, owned by Mesquite Landfill TX, was a sand and gravel mine for a nearby landfill, but has since been used to hold stormwater runoff.

The current Specific Use Permit would require the lake to eventually be refilled, and the owner requested a change to the SUP to allow the lake to remain.

The case was reviewed by the Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability and they found no objection to allowing the detention area to stay as is, according to staff reports.

Representatives of the Kleberg Neighborhood Association did not speak either for or against the development but said there’s a need for community meetings, comprehensive impact reports and a way to determine what is environmentally best for the area before making a decision.

The commissioners held the case until their April 10 meeting.
