Builders of Hope and Wesley-Rankin Community Center have launched a property tax assistance program to help West Dallas families stay in their homes, and have provided $102,454.93 to cover tax increases since 2020.
Janie Cisneros credits her neighborhood-based activism to serendipity. She is the leader of Singleton United/Unidos, a newly established neighborhood association in West Dallas, fighting for clean air and the removal of the long-standing roofing shingles plant, GAF, from her residential neighborhood.
From putting pressure on lead smelters in the 1980s to ongoing pushback against roofing manufacturer GAF, environmental justice issues in West Dallas have been community issues.
